About the project

With Future Fauna, I want to shine a light on the global problem of plastic pollution. Not only is our land polluted with plastic waste, but even more alarmingly, our oceans are overflowing with it.

Ever since Dutch inventor Boyan Slat launched The Ocean Cleanup, I’ve wanted to support this promising solution in every way I could. I’ve been searching for a way to generate meaningful donations, and with Future Fauna, I believe I’ve finally found one.

Because we are well on our way to driving countless animal species to extinction, I have set myself the task of creating our Future Fauna. As an Artivist, I create wooden sculptures that are bonded together using plastic.

Plastic will remain one of our planet’s most abundant resources for decades to come—our oceans are full of it. These future animals digest plastic, dramatically reducing the amount of waste while recycling the remaining particles. Plastic is part of their DNA.

Animals have proven to be better guardians of our planet than we humans. Through intensive bioengineering, I have equipped each future animal with unique abilities to clean up and protect our world. Every species possesses its own special characteristics, and together they form a connected ecosystem in which all creatures work as one.

Future Fauna is about transforming a global problem into a valuable resource. That is why cleaning our oceans and recovering those resources is essential. To me, that makes The Ocean Cleanup the perfect partner for this project.

The goal is to spread these future animals globally, so they can take care of our beloved planet.

5% of all earnings will be donated to this essential project.

What do they do?

The Ocean Cleanup develops advanced technologies to rid world’s oceans of plastic. A full-scale deployment of their systems is estimated to clean up 50% of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch every 5 years.

How about the donations?

5% of all income will be donated to The Ocean Cleanup on a 3-monthly bases. Proof of these 3-monthly donations will be posted on this website and displayed in the counter area above.

About the creator …

Tim Michielsen is a multidisciplinary artist, born and raised in Antwerp, who strives to make the world a better place. You could describe him as an Artivist.

After more than a decade of working primarily in digital media, creating abstract 3D renders, I felt the need to make something with my own hands again. Painting and drawing felt too two-dimensional, so I was naturally drawn to sculpture. Future Fauna is my first project as a sculptor.
